Have you ever considered what it may be like to care for hamsters as pets? It is possible that this particular article should bring clarification to most of your problems.

Both a pooch and a grimalkin expect lots of added room as compared to hamsters as pets. Their domicile needs barely to be as extensive as a dwelling for fish. It is not surprising that hamsters fit well into a small-scale townhouse.

You must invest time to support hamsters as pets. You will spend an equal share of time to care for hamsters as you would to care for a hound dog. Day after day, you need to parcel out food and water to your pets. Their toilets should to be cleaned habitually. Hamsters could do with at least an hour of human interaction each day – everyday. You will discover that the hamsters will need for you to clean their home each week.

As far as the monetary commitment, hamsters can cost as much as other pets to maintain. The animal itself will probably be the least expensive part. You will need to put 2 to 4 inches of bedding material at the bottom of the cage. Your hamster will eat about a teaspoon of food a day. Your pet should stay generally healthy, but there are no guarantees. This means that you may have to visit the veterinarian, and pay his bills.

“Cuddly” is not always the best word to describe hamsters as pets. The Syrian hamster – of all the hamster species – is most likely to be tame and enjoy human cuddling. Anticipate that the dwarf species will not be amenable to long term cuddling. Rather than being handled by their caretakers, the dwarf hamsters prefer to play “on” their human owners. In addition to being able to fit into tiny spaces, dwarf hamsters are quick.

Dogs and hamsters are similar in that they look forward to human company. A hamster can get used to his keeper’s presence just like a dog can. For this reason do not leave a hamster alone in your house for more than one or two days at a time.

Hamsters do not tolerate hot temperatures. They live underground where it is continuously cool. You must have air conditioning if you live in a climate where it will get warm. Whereas you may be able to suffer through days of 85 F (30 C), this temperature can kill your hamster.

The final thing to know about keeping hamsters as pets is that hamsters are nocturnal or crespuscular. This means that they are active at night or at dawn and twilight. Do not disturb them at times other than these.

Lastly, as long as you’re willing to make the commitment, hamsters do make rewarding pets.
