The sofa is one of the most important pieces of furniture in a home – it is the star of the living room, and one of the biggest stars in the sofa material lineup is leather. There are some things that you should keep in mind when choosing which modern leather sofa that you will buy.
Know Your Leather
When you first begin looking, you should do a bit of research. Learn the difference between the types of modern leather that are currently used to cover sofas. Choose a type that fits with your lifestyle. If you plan to have meals in your living room or if you have children, a sturdier variety of leather will be required.
Aniline leather is the most natural form of leather, being extraordinarily soft and supple. It has a refined look and retains characteristics of the natural hide. Because it is not chemically treated or artificially pigmented, only the best of the best hides are used to create aniline leather. You can also find semi-aniline leather, which has a light coating on the surface to provide a mild amount of protection from staining.
Coated leather is provided with a dazzling, high gloss finish by applying a thin film of polyurethane. The polyurethane coating gives a pleasing, shiny appearance and makes the leather much more spill resistant.
A sofa that is labeled simply ‘leather’ is often leather that has had imperfections removed, has had its surface embossed with a pattern to create a consistent all-over appearance, and has a protective layer coating the material to make it durable as well as stain resistant.
Compare Price and Appearance
Don’t be fooled by a low price and appealing looks. Make sure that the structure of the sofas that you are considering are made from good materials. If a retailer does not know, you can get in contact with the manufacturer to ask. Avoid any furniture that is constructed of waste wood or wood pallets. Sit on the sofa. It should be soft and comfortable. There should be no strange sounds from the inner construction – this means that the leather and framework are strong. When you stand up, the space that you sat in should almost immediately return to its form. You should also take the style of your room into consideration. No matter how beautiful the sofa that you want is, it will look out of place if your living room is a vastly different style.
Size and Space
Be sure that you have enough space in the room in which you plan to place your sofa. You might want those luxurious 3 seater leather sofas, but not all rooms will accommodate 3 seat sofas. Don’t assume that 3 seat sofas will fit into your living room, even if you think that it is quite large. Get out a measuring tape and write down the exact measurements of the room and of the doorways that lead into it. Take your measurements and measuring tape with you when you go shopping for 3 seater leather sofas, or whichever variety you have your heart set on.
Do not be afraid to measure the piece of furniture with your own tape. If it will not fit into the space or fit through your doors, there is not much use in buying it.
Know How to Clean It
It is inevitable that, no matter how careful you are, your sofa will acquire scuff marks and stains. Make sure that you know how to clean the material successfully before you buy the sofa. There are many leather cleaners on the market. Ask what you should use to clean the leather in the event that it gets a mark or stain.
